Going Green Undercover: Tips for the Sustainable Mystery Shopper

Mystery shopping can be a fun and rewarding way to earn extra income. But what if you're also passionate about sustainability?  Can you combine your undercover missions with eco-conscious choices? Absolutely! Here's how to make your Mystery Shopping adventures more sustainable: 

Before You Shop: 

• Plan Your Route: Minimize travel time and fuel consumption by efficiently planning your Mystery Shopping trips. Bundle assignments in the same area and use navigation apps to find the most direct routes. Consider walking, cycling, or using public transport when feasible. • Pack Light and Reusable: Carry a reusable shopping bag, water bottle, and any other essentials you might need. This reduces waste from single use items and keeps you prepared for anything.
• Think Before you Print: Review the survey and Shopper guidelines (instructions for your Mystery Shop) digitally instead of printing them out. If you are conducting a revealed audit (a Mystery Shop where you identify yourself as a Mystery Shopper), you may be provided with a Letter of Authorization (LOA) to present to the on-site employees. Check to see if that document needs to be printed and shown physically or if it can be presented digitally – many programs now offer digital LOAs. 

During Your Mystery Shop: 

• Minimize Purchases: As a Mystery Shopper, you sometimes have to make purchases. When possible, choose products with minimal packaging or eco-friendly options.  If the assignment allows, consider buying second-hand items or opting for experiences rather than material goods.
• Be Mindful of Consumption: Even if a purchase is required, consider the item's longevity and your actual need for it.  Will it end up in a landfill shortly after the assignment?  Could you repurpose or donate it?  Making conscious choices about consumption is key to sustainable shopping.
• Digitalize Your Notes: Instead of using paper, fill out your survey from a phone or tablet while you conduct the Mystery Shop. This saves paper and keeps your information organized. Remember to be discreet while note-taking to maintain your undercover status.
• Refuse Excess: Politely decline unnecessary extras like single-use cutlery, straws, or excessive packaging.  

After Your Shop: 

• Properly Dispose of Waste: Recycle any packaging or materials from your assignment.  Dispose of any unavoidable waste responsibly.
• Share Your Sustainable Practices: Talk to other Mystery Shoppers about your sustainable approach.  Share tips and encourage them to adopt eco-conscious habits.
• Provide Constructive Feedback: When asked to do so, use your reports to provide feedback on the businesses' sustainability practices.  Highlight both positive efforts and areas for improvement.
