Mystery Shopping: A Side Hustle for Savvy Moms

So, you're a mom, constantly juggling schedules, snacks, and everything in between. You're looking for a flexible way to earn some extra cash, and you've heard whispers of "Mystery Shopping."  Could this be the perfect side hustle for you?

What is Mystery Shopping?

Mystery shopping is a market research method where everyday people act as regular customers and evaluate their experiences. This can range from retail stores and restaurants to hotels and even car dealerships. As a Mystery Shopper, you'll be assigned specific tasks, make observations, and submit detailed reports about your experience. Why Mystery Shopping works for moms

We asked our current panel of Mystery Shopping moms why they choose to Mystery Shop – here’s what they had to say:

  • Flexibility: Choose assignments that fit your schedule, whether it's during naptime, after school drop-off, or while running errands.

“Moms are super busy, so one hack would be to fit Mystery Shopping into your already full schedule. If you are picking up a child from an event, leave early and grab a Shop. If you are dropping off a child at school or other activity, then plan a Shop for the way home. This helps Mystery Shopping to be more fun and less stressful!” – Michele, Iowa

“Having control of my time to Shop when I am able is a great blessing.” – RoxAnne, Virginia

  • Extra income: While it may not replace a full-time salary, Mystery Shopping can provide a valuable supplemental income stream for those everyday expenses or little luxuries.

“My kids have always come first no matter what... I work around schedules to do Shops to get extra money for things they need. Sometimes I do Shops to have money to do something special that we do not get to do very often.” – Laquita, Oklahoma

  • You’ve got the skills: Mystery shopping takes patience, attention to detail, multitasking & commitment.

“As a mom, I am always observing things and looking for teachable moments. As a Mystery Shopper, I can give feedback to help [employees] do their jobs better. I try to look for opportunities to give positive feedback as well as ways to grow. I did this when raising my children who are now adults, and I am using this same philosophy with my grandchildren!” – Michelle, Iowa

  • Inspire the next generation: As a Mystery Shopper, you are running your own business. Be the best mompreneur you can be!

“Makes me want to set a good example for my kids and show them how to be kind and respectful.” – Jennifer, South Dakota

“Showing the kids a strong, hardworking mom inspires them and motivates them to learn from the best to be the best they can be!” – Misty, North Carolina

Tips for moms, by moms

Here’s how our Mystery Shopping moms think you can be the most successful on your Mystery Shopping journey:

  • Find time just for you: As a Mystery Shopper, you work for yourself, so it’s important to make space for your business. Set aside dedicated focus time so you can set yourself up for success.

“Set aside time every day or night, where everyone knows not to bother you unless it is an emergency.  Use this time for reports, getting organized, preparing for jobs, and/or finding jobs.” – Heather, Florida

  • See a need, fill a need: In addition to extra income, Mystery Shops often have side benefits like purchases, meals or experiences that are reimbursed. Find opportunities that make the most sense for you and your lifestyle.

“When my daughter was far away at school, being able to send her gift boxes for special occasions was quite beneficial.” – Karol, Texas

  • Plan ahead: Keep track of assignments and deadlines. Use a calendar or planner to manage your schedule effectively.

“As a toddler mom, planning is the key. I look for child-friendly assignments, whenever possible. Mornings or right after a nap is the best time for a little one. I also try to pick locations where I may already need to go, so after Mystery Shopping I can run my errands/do my own shopping, saving time (and gas!).” – Ambreen, Maryland

  • Be patient and professional: Even if you encounter poor customer service, remain calm and objective.

“I once did a gas station Mystery Shop, and I could tell that the cashier was having a rough day. When I revealed the audit, I could see that the look on her face was like, ‘Oh great, one more thing to deal with.’ I made light of the situation, praised her on asking about rewards and... her entire countenance changed. I was not there to be critical but to get information and give feedback. When she realized that, she smiled and thanked me. I love making people feel good, and if I can do a small thing to turn someone's day around, that helps make mine even better!” – Michelle, Iowa

  • Get Organized: As a mom and a Mystery Shopper, there are a lot of things to keep track of. Set yourself (and your business) up for success by creating separate spaces for your personal life and Mystery Shopping business.

“Keep a separate, dedicated email for only Mystery Shops. Do not use your standard email. Assigned jobs in your email will be missed.” – Ursula, Texas

“Carry a shopping list with reminders as a prop.” – Jill, Minnesota

  • Branch Out: Be open to trying different types of Shops, even if they're outside your usual comfort zone.

“It has helped me broaden my Mystery Shopping locations into wider areas for a more family-oriented experience.” – Misty, North Carolina

  • Be kind to yourself: You won’t get everything right the first time, and that’s okay. When things don’t go to plan, take it in stride and learn from your mistakes.

“Years ago, one of my first phone Shops, I was scared and sounded scripted.  At the end of the call, the guy called me out for being the Mystery Shopper.  That stuck with me and I made sure that never happened again.” – Heather, Florida

  • Have fun!

“But even though times are tough, I try to not be too hard on myself or have too many expectations because as mothers, we are already doing too much and have too much on our plates. I try to have fun (alone, or with my toddler) while Mystery Shopping and don't look at it as work, but a different experience. When I'm with my little one, we always go to the park after Mystery Shopping so we can really call it a fun-day!” – Ambreen, Maryland

Mystery shopping can be a fun and rewarding way for moms to earn extra income while keeping your schedule flexible. By following these tips and staying organized, you can make the most of this unique opportunity. Remember, as a Mystery Shopper, you work for yourself. It’s your business, so treat it professionally and enjoy the perks of being a savvy undercover mom!
